I am hoping some club members can share their process and results for bleaching red oak and hard maple.

I have reviewed the articles on AAW and located a local source for the 27% hydrogen peroxide and sodium hydroxide. I have some scrap pieces to test on. I intend to follow up with some dyes. If you have some wood you want to test I can put it in the regime as well.

    Thanks! Jon

Jon, I'm pretty new at this and haven't yet gotten into bleaching or dyeing wood.  I'll look forward to someone answering your question.

    Jon,

while I have not bleached red oak or hard maple , I have bleached box elder with good results using Klean strip two part wood bleach. It is sodium hydroxide ( part A) and hydrogen peroxide (part B). I followed the directions which said to mix equal parts A and B in an open plastic container. Only mix what you are going to use right away. Apply it with a nylon brush. I used throw away chip brushes from Harbor freight. Do not let it puddle, l soaked up puddles with a paper towel. Wait a couple of hours , if it’s light enough you’re done. Wait 24 hrs.and lightly sand off the fuzzy raised grain. Do not sand too hard or you will sand through the bleached wood. If it’s not light enough or blotchy apply a second coat of just part B( hydrogen peroxide) . If still not light enough apply a second coat of a new mixture of A &B . After at least 30 min. this coat must be neutralized using 2parts water & 1 part white vinegar. Again allow to dry 24 hrs. and sand lightly. Forgot to mention, before you start, your piece must be finish sanded. Make sure you wear all the appropriate safety gear and work in a well ventilated area.
